Vad du kan förvänta dig

After a gastric sleeve operation, a weight loss of approximately 50-80% of excess weight can be achieved within the first 1-2 years. It is important to remember that the results may be less stable in the longer term, especially after five years. Over time, the volume of the stomach may gradually increase, and it is possible to gain weight again. In order to maintain the result, continuous follow-up and an adapted lifestyle are essential. Research has shown that the gastric sleeve can lead to improved quality of life. Many individuals experience a reduction or even disappearance of obesity-related health problems after sleeve surgery. It is important to note that results may vary from person to person, so it is important to consult with our surgeons and follow recommended guidelines for the best possible results.

Gastric Sleeve

Gastric Sleeve

Gastric sleeve is a surgical procedure that only involves the stomach and does not involve surgery on the intestine. During obesity surgery, 80% of the stomach is removed so that the remaining stomach takes the shape of a tube or a sleeve – hence the name “sleeve”. A narrow tubular part remains. The part of the stomach that is surgically removed is taken out of the abdominal cavity. The narrow, tubular part that remains is “stitched” tightly with advanced surgical instruments. The gastric sleeve has a hormonal effect that leads to a reduction in feelings of hunger. When the reduced stomach fills, a pressure is also created that gives an early and relatively long-lasting feeling of satiety. If you eat too large amounts of food, or if you eat too quickly, at worst you will feel nauseous and may vomit. The method is not reversible, i.e. it cannot be restored, but is perceived by some as more gentle than gastric bypass. This is due to not rewiring the intestines. However, the risk of complications does not differ significantly between the surgical methods.

The advantages of the gastric sleeve

  1. Permanent Weight Loss: An obesity operation, such as gastric sleeve or gastric bypass, can lead to significant and long-lasting weight loss. Many patients achieve a weight loss of approximately 80% of their excess weight. This can help achieve and maintain a healthy weight, reducing the risk of obesity-related diseases.
  2. Reduced Health Risks: The weight loss that accompanies bariatric surgery can reduce the risk of a range of obesity-related health problems, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood fats, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea, depression and joint pain. Other diseases such as reflux, polycystic ovary syndrome, migraines, asthma and incontinence can also be improved or alleviated.
  3. Reduced Medication: Many patients can reduce or stop their medications after bariatric surgery, especially if their health problems are directly linked to their excess weight.
  4. Improved Quality of Life: Studies have shown that quality of life improves significantly after bariatric surgery. Patients often report higher levels of energy, confidence and physical activity.
  5. Changed Eating Behavior: After surgery, patients may experience a change in their eating behaviors. They may experience early satiety and a reduced desire to eat large amounts of food, making it easier to control their weight.
  6. Hormonal Changes: Bariatric surgery can affect the hormonal and nervous system in a way that reduces feelings of hunger and the urge to overeat. This can be an important factor in maintaining weight loss in the long term
  7. Better Mental Health: Many patients report an improvement in their mental health after bariatric surgery. Reduced weight and improved health can reduce stress, depression and anxiety.
  8. Long-term Weight Stability: With the right aftercare and follow-up, patients can maintain their weight loss in the long term.

Adaptation of Dietary Habits

After obesity surgery, whether gastric sleeve or gastric bypass, it is crucial to adopt new eating habits. There is research that suggests sleeve surgery patients may not be as sensitive to fat and sugar as those who have undergone gastric bypass surgery. Studies are ongoing to evaluate whether different supplementation of vitamins and minerals may be necessary for these two groups, but currently the same supplementation is prescribed for both.

Increased Popularity of the Gastric Sleeve

Gastric sleeve has grown in popularity and has become increasingly common over the past five years in Sweden. Originally, the method was developed in the 80s as the first step in a major obesity operation called a duodenal switch. Now, however, the gastric sleeve is performed as an independent gastric sleeve operation with peephole surgery and now makes up as much as 50% of all obesity surgeries in the country. At CK Klinikerna Kirurgi, our experienced surgeons can guide you through this proven and effective treatment to help you on your journey to a healthier weight and lifestyle.

STEP 1 – First contact with CK Klinikerna Kirurgi

The very first step is to contact us at CK Klinikerna Kirurgi when you are considering obesity surgery. We encourage you to first carefully review the information on our website to better understand the process. When you feel ready, you can contact us either by phone or by using the contact form found here on our website. For obesity surgery to be relevant, you need to meet certain basic criteria. These include being over the age of 20, having a BMI over 35 and a long history of being overweight and obese that has not responded well to traditional weight loss methods. During the first step, Step 1, you will have a conversation session with our experienced nurses and dietitians. If you qualify for further investigation, you will need to provide us with the following information:

  • Blood pressure, pulse and EKG results.
  • Blood test results.
  • Health declaration.
  • Your height, weight and waist measurement.

STEP 2 – Surgical assessment

The next step, Step 2, involves a conversation with one of our experienced surgeons. This conversation can take place either at our reception or via phone or video call. Together with the surgeon, you will go through exactly what is involved in obesity surgery and the lifestyle changes required afterwards. The surgeon will also provide you with detailed information about the various surgical procedures that we offer. It is our highest priority that you feel fully informed and secure throughout the process.

STEP 3 – Narcotic assessment

The third step, Step 3, is an assessment of your health situation by our experienced anesthesiologist. This assessment aims to assess whether you are suitable for bariatric surgery and to do so with as minimal risk as possible, given the potential benefits that the surgery can bring.

STEP 4 – Book your surgery date

Once you have been approved by the above bodies, our surgery coordinator will contact you to book your surgery date. We will work with you to find a date that works best for you and your schedule.

Preparations for the operation

Before your operation, you will receive written information from CK Klinikerna Kirurgi. It is of the utmost importance that you take the time to carefully review all material that we send you. If anything is unclear or if you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us in good time so that we can provide you with the support and guidance you need. Before the operation, it may be necessary for you to lose a certain amount of weight. This is done to reduce the size of the liver and reduce the amount of fat around the internal organs in the abdominal area. This makes the operation easier for the surgeon. Depending on your current BMI, you may be required to start a low-calorie diet a few weeks before surgery. If you smoke, it is of the utmost importance that you stop smoking no later than four weeks before the day of surgery. Quitting smoking has many positive health effects both before, during and after surgery. It reduces the risk of complications, promotes wound healing and improves your long-term health. Tell your doctor if you need support and help to quit smoking.

Dietary advice for those undergoing obesity surgery

After gastric sleeve surgery, your ability to control your eating will change. To achieve a healthy and sustainable eating behavior, you need to be motivated and goal-oriented. This is where CK Kirurgkliniken’s nutrition advisors come to your aid, both before and after the operation.

Advice from our dietician

Before the bariatric surgery, you will have a thorough review with our dietician who will give you detailed information about what and how you should eat both in the near future after the surgery and in your new life as a patient. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and together you will go through the low-calorie diet that you need to follow in the weeks before the operation, as well as the dietary habits that will apply after the operation. When you are discharged after surgery, you will receive additional tips and dietary advice. In addition, you will have the contact details of your nutritionist and can reach them at any time. Some important guidelines to always follow include:

  • Eat and drink slowly.
  • Eat regularly with 6 small meals per day.
  • Drink 1.5-2 liters of fluid every day and never skip a meal.

For some patients, concerns may arise about whether they will be able to enjoy food after their bariatric surgery. The answer is yes, but in a different way than before.

How should I eat in the weeks before my bariatric surgery?

To achieve your target weight before surgery, we recommend a low-calorie diet for rapid weight loss. Follow these guidelines:

  • Choose a complete diet replacement (not a meal replacement).
  • Distribute the number of portions evenly throughout the day.
  • Consume only powdered diet and avoid other foods or drinks that contain calories.
  • Drink plenty of water, preferably more than 2 liters daily (flavored and carbonated water is also allowed).
  • Coffee and tea without sugar and milk are approved (sweeteners are allowed).

Remember, you have to do the work, but our dietitian will give you the best tools and conditions to succeed in a healthy lifestyle.

The day of surgery

On the day of surgery, you will arrive at our reception approximately 2-3 hours before your surgery. This gives us enough time to prepare you and gives you the opportunity to discuss your operation with both the surgeon and the anesthesiologist. We strive for you to feel safe and secure during the entire operation process. A gastric sleeve operation normally takes about 1 hour to perform. After the operation, you will spend time in our recovery department until the next morning. You will then be moved to a comfortable overnight room, which is close to the recovery ward. We will closely monitor your recovery.

Efter operationen

What happens after the operation?

After your gastric sleeve surgery, you will wake up in our recovery room and then be moved to one of our comfortable patient rooms. You will stay with us for two days and throughout this time our staff will monitor your recovery. To facilitate your transition to your “new” stomach and to enable a smooth recovery, we recommend that you are on sick leave for four weeks. This gives you time to adapt to your new eating behavior, get enough fluids and meals, and follow our guidelines for physical activity.

Support?

Up to two years after your surgery, we will follow up with you through a carefully planned program. You will receive this program when you are discharged from our clinic to ensure your continued success and health.

How should I eat after my bariatric surgery?

Here is the advice from our nutrition advisor that you can follow week by week after your bariatric surgery:

Liquid diet after bariatric surgery, week 1-2:

  • For the first two weeks after surgery, you should eat only liquid food. The consistency should be completely smooth with no lumps, and it should flow evenly when you pour it. Use a blender to make smooth soups and smoothies.

Soft food after bariatric surgery, week 3-4:

  • After the first two weeks, you switch to soft and pureed food. The consistency should still be smooth and free of lumps, but slightly firmer than liquid diet. For example, you can mix meat with a little liquid (milk, water, broth) to a smooth consistency. Soft and already adjusted foods can also be mashed well with a fork. Supplement with recommended protein powder during weeks 1-4.

Introduction of foods, week 5:

  • Now you can carefully start to include solid food in your diet. Start with easily chewed food and remember to chew properly. Certain foods can be extra sensitive in the first few months, so be careful with stringy and sticky foods such as rhubarb, shrimp, broccoli stalks, white rice, white bread and pasta. It may be good to wait with these for a while before introducing them into your diet.

Vitamin recommendations for obesity patients:

  • SOREG (Scandinavian Obesity Surgery Registry) has established national guidelines for which vitamins and minerals should be taken as dietary supplements after bariatric surgery. CK Slim Clinic has chosen to follow these guidelines as a first-line recommendation. For a gastric sleeve operation, daily dietary supplements should contain the following substances:
    • Iron (45-60 mg/day)
    • Vitamin B12 (cyanocobolamine 350 micrograms/day) (can also be given as an injection every three months)
    • Vitamin D (800 IU) in combination with calcium
    • Folate (400 micrograms/day)
    • Thiamine (women 1.1 mg/day, men 1.4 mg/day)
    • Zinc (9 mg/day)

Remember that vitamins will be part of your daily routine for life, so make sure you have a handy place for your tablets. It is important that you take them regularly.

How do I get a prescription for the vitamins if I have undergone bariatric surgery?

You can order Baricol vitamins yourself via their website and also choose to subscribe to them, which we recommend. If you prefer to receive prescription vitamins, you will receive renewed prescriptions throughout the follow-up period. After that, you can contact your healthcare center for prescription renewal.

What happens if I have bariatric surgery and don’t take my vitamins?

Initially, there will be no immediate consequences. Many patients feel that they feel well and eat better than ever and therefore believe that they do not need nutritional supplements. The problem is that deficiencies and deficiency symptoms take time to develop and can be diffuse. Long-term vitamin deficiencies can lead to serious consequences such as osteoporosis, anemia and nerve damage, and once these symptoms appear it may be too late. It is highly recommended that you take nutritional supplements for life, which is one of the most important aspects of your self-care after surgery.

Possible risks and complications

Although the risk of complications after gastric sleeve surgery (LSG) is very low, it is important to be aware of possible risks. These include:

  • Wound infection: It is possible to develop a wound infection after surgery, although this is uncommon with peephole surgery such as LSG. If an infection occurs, it can usually be treated locally with the help of your health center.
  • Bleeding: Bleeding during or after surgical procedures may sometimes need to be treated and, in rare cases, may require further operations.
  • Leakage: It is rare, but sometimes leakage can occur in the constructed gastric tube after LSG. This is serious because it can mean that stomach and intestinal contents leak into the abdominal cavity. Leakage usually occurs within the first few days after surgery and usually requires additional surgical procedures.
  • Heartburn: After gastric sleeve surgery, the risk of heartburn and acid reflux may increase. These symptoms are common in the first few months after surgery and tend to disappear with time. In some cases, however, the symptoms may persist and require lifelong treatment with proton pump inhibitors.
